Getting started
What ages is BookHero for?
Ages 5 to 13. Kid mode runs on icons and big buttons, so it works even before they’re reading on their own.
Which phones does it run on?
Android devices today, via Google Play. The iPhone version is coming soon to the App Store.
How long does setup take?
About two minutes: create the family, add your kids, choose a reading level and a token rate.
How many kids can I add?
Up to four kids and two parents per family account.
Which languages does it support?
English, Spanish and Catalan.
Reading and quizzes
Which books count?
Any physical book with printed prose: novels, chapter books, school readers. Comics and graphic novels are coming later. If the book has an ISBN, add it by scanning the barcode.
Where do the quiz questions come from?
They’re generated from the page your kid photographs at the end of the session, so they’re about what they actually just read.
What are reading levels?
There are four, from Early Reader to Independent. They set how demanding the questions are. You pick one for each kid and can change it any time.
What if my kid scans the same page twice?
The session gets flagged for your review. Tokens wait until you approve it, or mark it as not valid.
Tokens and screen time
How are tokens calculated?
From how much they read, with a bonus for right answers in the quiz. Daily streaks add a little extra on top.
Who decides what a minute of screen time costs?
You do. Set the rate in parent mode and change it whenever you like.
Does BookHero lock the tablet or console?
No. BookHero is a token bank and a timer: it counts the time down, warns at 5 minutes and 1 minute, and shows you live who’s playing.
Can I give or take away tokens?
Yes. Parent mode lets you give tokens for a good week or deduct them when needed.
Privacy and safety
What data does BookHero keep about my kids?
A name, birth year, avatar and an optional PIN. Kids don’t need an email address.
What happens to the page photos?
They’re only used to generate the quiz questions and aren’t kept on the phone after the session.
Can my kids change the rules?
No. Parent mode is locked with your PIN or fingerprint.
